Growing up in a body shop family, “Bruce” Hutchins knew the business from the inside out. But his vision (influenced by wife Judy, an outsider to the industry) evolved to create a different body shop…more customer focused…more employee focused…more environmentally safe. The first high tech Bruce’s facility opened in 1990 on Midlothian Turnpike in Richmond. This high traffic corridor welcomed consumers with what remains their logo and focal point, a neon circle emblazing the Bruce’s Super Body Shop name.

What followed 4 years later was the prototype for more facilities in the Bruce’s Super Body Shops series. The most recent addition open in 2002 in Williamsburg. It duplicates the modern glass and metal structure from the Richmond store. Blue neon streaks to the sky flanking the building’s circular entrance. Fiery panels top this architectural feature, which is punctuated with a glass-domed atrium, placed center stage.

Once inside the customer quickly finds the 24,000-foot facility is designed not only for their comfort…but also that of the employees. The waiting room is glass walled and looks into the workspace.

Tours are offered inside the state-of-the-art Nirvana, offering a closer look. The Yellow Brick Road leads you through computerized alignment, frame straightening, dent repairing, sanding and finally when you’re standing in front of the BlowTherm paint booths, which bake on the finish at 200¾, you realize, you’ve never broken a sweat—nor have the highly-skilled, busy workers. Thanks to a 5000-ton air-handling unit, the entire 24,000-foot facility is air-conditioned.

The pristine white floors glisten, due in part to the illumination level produced from 1000-foot candle ceiling fixtures. Each workstation is equipped with a vacuum system, keeping the work site neat. And a regular maintenance crew, buffing the floor, adds to the hospital setting. It’s also why the vehicles are washed twice at Bruce’s, once before repairs begin…and again at completion before you take delivery.
